Canopy South serves the Southside Terrace/Indian Hill neighborhood of Omaha, NE

Our work is dedicated to improving the Southside Terrace - Indian Hill community. We do this by partnering with neighbors, other community organizations, and with Purpose Built Communities for the Purpose Built Communities Model. Purpose Built works to ensure that every neighborhood can become a pathway to prosperity for the people who live there, resulting in greater racial equity, increased upward mobility, and improved health and wellness for residents. As part of the Purpose Built Communities Network, we created this community dashboard, which shares data about Southside Terrace - Indian Hill in comparison to the same data for Omaha.

Creating pathways to prosperity is complex work that takes decades. The data displayed below are population-level metrics related to the short-term outcomes in the theory of change for the Purpose Built Communities Model. The data in these dashboards help us understand progress and complement the understanding we gain from working in partnership with neighbors.

Note that the metrics displayed here reflect the collective vision of the Purpose Built Communities network. Not every metric is a priority consideration for Canopy South.

HOUSING STABILITY

Purpose Built looks at multiple measures to understand housing stability, which tells us that a neighborhood is somewhere that people feel invested in. Stable housing is also foundational for health, education and economic prosperity. Information here is from the American Community Survey 5-year estimate and our local school district.

ECONOMIC VITALITY

To understand access to high-quality educational pathways, Purpose Built looks at data about enrollment in pre-kindergarten programs and third-grade reading. Education, beginning at birth, is vital for healthy child development. High-quality, community-serving schools foster children’s development and prepare them for life. Information here is from local school districts and the American Community Survey 5-year estimate.

Canopy South is working to launch the nation’s second Community Investment Trust (CIT). This program allows residents of zip code 68107 the opportunity to invest into a low risk, commercial property with low monthly investments of $10, $50, or $100. Through this, residents, or in this case investors, will be able to build equity through the CIT building from the tenants that will occupy the building. The annual dividend for investors will range from 6 to 8%. The CIT building is a vehicle to support residents, help them achieve their financial goals, become economically self-sufficient, and support their wealth creation.

Purpose Built Communities looks at employment rates to understand community prosperity and upward mobility. Additionally, research evidence from Opportunity Insights shows that growing up in a community where neighbors are working is a significant predictor of future upward mobility. Canopy South has launched a Cradle-to-Career Education Community of Practice to foster collaboration, innovation, advocacy, and capacity building among dedicated education and youth service professionals. This effort will help create a supportive ecosystem that improves the educational outcomes for children (birth to age 18) who live in the Southside Terrace – Indian Hill neighborhood. These estimates are calculated using a method that combines real data from similar areas to provide insights at the neighborhood level.
