Connect Community serves the Gulfton / Sharpstown neighborhood of Houston, TX

Our work is dedicated to improving the Gulfton/Sharpston community. We do this by partnering with neighbors, other community organizations, and with Purpose Built Communities for the Purpose Built Communities Model. Purpose Built works to ensure that every neighborhood can become a pathway to prosperity for the people who live there, resulting in greater racial equity, increased upward mobility, and improved health and wellness for residents. As part of the Purpose Built Communities Network, we created this community dashboard, which shares data about Gulfton/Sharpstown in comparison to the same data for Houston.

Creating pathways to prosperity is complex work that takes decades. The data displayed below are population-level metrics related to the short-term outcomes in the theory of change for the Purpose Built Communities Model. The data in these dashboards help us understand progress and enhance the understanding we gain from working in partnership with residents.

Note that the metrics displayed here reflect the collective vision of the Purpose Built Communities network. Not every metric is a priority consideration for Connect Community.

HOUSING STABILITY

Purpose Built looks at multiple measures to understand housing stability, which tells us that a neighborhood is somewhere that people feel invested in. Stable housing is also foundational for health, education and economic prosperity. Information here is from the American Community Survey 5-year estimate and our local school district.

With 66 apartment complexes and 15,000 apartment units in less than a two mile radius, a majority of Gulfton/Sharpstown residents are renters. Connect Community is creating opportunities for affordable housing and home ownership in Gulfton/Sharpstown.

Information here is from local school districts and the American Community Survey 5-year estimate.

These estimates are calculated using a method that combines real data from similar areas to provide insights at the neighborhood level. While the estimates are reliable, they are not direct responses from neighborhood residents.

Connect Community focuses on advancing access to culturally appropriate mental health services as many Newcomers arrive having experienced significant trauma.
